The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS) is India’s new criminal procedure law replacing the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 (CrPC). It came into force on 1 July 2024. The Act contains 531 sections across 39 chapters. It introduces major reforms including Zero FIR, mandatory forensic investigation, audio-video recording of evidence, and time-bound trials.
